RWB Kid’s Fishing Day – 2019

Prior to the event we had 164 kids pre-registered.

  • After phone /email/text/notifications on the Sunday prior to the event, we had 156 kids confirmed.
  • On day of event we had 127 kids present between the ages of 9 – 14. (Weather might have been factor on no-shows).

A new system was used this year to send out reminders via Goggle Voice. A message was sent to their email and phones for them to press “Y” to attend and “N” to decline. This cut down numerous hours of phone calls.

27 Deputy Volunteers, 6 volunteers from EMT (Rescue 14), 8 military and 24 VBBFC members. There were also 23 chaperones with various groups. Totaling 88 volunteers.

Total fish caught and released: 630
Total inches of all fish released: 5,298 inches
Team Whaler caught 109 fish
Team Angler caught 320 fish
Team Mariner caught 192 fish
Species caught included Spot, Croaker, spotted Hak fish, Spanish mackerel, Black Tip shark 26” and Skate
Largest fish caught was 26 inch Black Tip Shark

6 morning educational sessions included:
Fish/Marine Life Identification
Knot Tying
Assembling bottom rigs
Boat/Marine Safety
Rod and Reel handling
Conservation with Sea Turtle & Artifacts: Virginia Aquarium

Lunch by Zero’s totaling 265 subs $ 503.50

The Kitchen Staff at Sheriff’s Office baked and donated 270 cookies for the lunch.

4 hour fishing trip on 3 head boats: $3.900

21 trophies for the Catch & Release Tournament were bought by VBBFC and were etched free of charge by Vanguard Industries

A new system was devised to simply the scorekeeping and tallying the final scores. The sheets were lamented and grease pencils were added to keep scores dry in event of inclement weather. A meeting was held with the Boat captains to explain the new procedures.

Youth were recruited from various organizations and youth groups to include St Matthew’s CYA, Drug Education for Youth Norfolk, Chosen 4 Compassion, City of Virginia Beach (bldg2 families), Cub Scout Pack 700, Virginia Beach Fire Department, Virginia Beach Police Department, United States Coast Guard, Men of Faith and Virginia Beach Sheriff’s office.
